John Spencer "Sandy" Colville J29167.
Born 21 June, 1920.
Son of Alexander and Annie Josephine Colville of Bowmanville, Ontario.
Sandy had two brothers that were pilots in the RCAF, William and Alexander Colville. William died 6 May, 1942 & Alexander died 16 March, 1944.
Because of friendly fire incidents, the unofficial (or maybe official?) stance on the subject was basically; If you are getting attacked by Allied planes, shoot 'em down. This went for pilots as well as ground personnel.
On 18 August 1944, while flying a 440 Squadron Typhoon (MN929), he erroneously strafed a Canadian convoy near Vimoutiers & was shot down by return fire. He managed to bale out but his parachute did not open.
A sad day for 440 squadron as he was a favorite among the pilots and was considered a great guy by all accounts.
He is buried at the Bretteville-Sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery in Calvados, France, XIX A 6
